The Cherohala Skyway winds about 41 miles across the mountains between Tellico Plains, TN and Robbinsville, NC. (Robbinsville is not actually at the end of the Cherohala Skyway but it is the closest city) It is an absolutely beautiful drive (or ride in my case!) through some gorgeous scenery. It is quite desolate though, and there are no services whatsoever except at the ends. In winter it is also very difficult to get through because of ice and snow. It is worth the trip though.
The mountains in this part of the country are nothing compared to their western brethren. Santeetlah is, I think, the hishest point on the Cherohala Skyway and it is only at 5,390′ MSL. Also, the views in this part of the country are frequently blocked by trees. Don’t expect the majestic views offered by the western states, but they are still fantastic.
